Hi, my name is Eka Prawira and I am a team member of Fab Lab Bali. We are a fairly new node that launched in October 2023 as a result of Bali Fab Fest 2022.
"So what do you do?" Sometimes I have trouble answering that basic question. I do lots and lots of different things; some seem unrelated at all, and people are just puzzled about how and why (including myself!). But after I attended the Fab Fest back in 2022, I realized something: I'm not the only one!
I've been called many things: maker, programmer, designer, instructor, woodworker, metalworker, animator, hobbyist engineer, amateur cook, and many more. It's not uncommon for me to spend my time in front of the computer writing a program one minute, and then the next minute putting on a respirator to cut some plywood or steel, then the next minute designing bicycle in Fusion 360.
I believe that creating something, whether it's digital or physical, is my way of expressing my creativity. That's why I like to learn new things that pique my interests. Most of the time, I learn on my own through watching free tutorials, reading articles and books, or attending workshops and exploring further on my own.
I graduated at the top of my class from Swinburne University in Melbourne, where I studied Digital Media Design with a specialization in 3D animation. However, the year after my graduation was quite challenging as a foreigner seeking a 3D animation job with a temporary visa limiting me to a maximum duration of one and a half years. I struggled, taking on various odd jobs before finally securing a stable position as a motion graphic animator at Purplemonky, a video production company. However, I am aware that I need to plan for my future once I return to Indonesia in about a year.
